Break the Habit

The Golden Nugget: “Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit.” —Vince Lombardi

Daily Verse: “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.” —1 Corinthians 16:13

Daily Message:
Not too many professional football players wanted to play for head coach Vince Lombardi. Lombardi’s daughter, Susan, recently told a sports newsmagazine, “As the saying goes, my father treated [all the players] the same. Like dogs.” Which is to say that playing for Lombardi was very hard. But the players did not quit on him. They were committed to Lombardi because they knew that he could help them win championships. And they did—at least those who didn’t quit won championships.

Sometimes we need to hear the encouragement from God never to give up. God wants you to reap the benefits he intends for you. Not everyone is on board with that. God’s enemies will make you doubt whether it’s all worth it. You will encounter times in life when it will seem easier to quit. If you cease your faith journey, the bad habit has begun. Giving up leads to drying up. God’s outcome, however, is so worth it. Learn the good habit. Never give up with God on your side.

Consider This:

  • When facing obstacles, to whom or where do you turn for coaching?
  • Who is your biggest encourager? Why does that person take that role for you?

Take Action:
Be still with God for thirty minutes. You’ll be tempted to quit before the time is up. You’ll be tempted to nap, but don’t quit. You’ll be tempted by all sorts of distractions, but don’t quit. Talk to God, then listen. Never give up.
