At the absolute edge of despair, Sara sat at her computer ready to end her life. But a sudden, miraculous breath of the Holy Spirit interrupted her — igniting a passion to reach her homeland online.
“On every street corner in India, you’ll find idols and temples… people are surrounded by religion. But they’re split between those who will follow any religion that feels good and those committed to Hindu traditions. Sharing the Gospel is a struggle.”
These words, from ExploreGod’s Hindi Community Lead, Sara,* illustrate the challenges of leading Hindi speakers to give their lives to Christ. For many, Christianity is either a casual add-on to their existing beliefs — or it’s disregarded entirely.
ExploreGod enables deep human-to-human connections that produce Gospel-powered life transformation. But that transformation doesn’t happen by accident. It requires faithful believers willing to live out the Great Commission.
For Sara, a midnight search for a way to end her life collided with a God who loves her — igniting a passion to help others discover that same grace.
Growing up in India, Sara was surrounded by myriad religious beliefs. Her family attended a Catholic church, but the emphasis on Jesus was minimal. Sharing the Gospel with others was virtually nonexistent.
Years later, after moving to a new church, Sara’s mother gave her life to Christ and began to pray fervently for her entire family.
But by then, Sara had already moved to the United States. The roots of her faith were shallow at best.
“My mom had given me a Bible, but I never opened it,” Sara said. “Even though she had done her best to help build a foundation, I wasn’t following Jesus in any way.”
Then a crisis shifted Sara’s reality. And it wasn’t just a personal crisis — it was a global one.
The 2008 financial collapse devastated countless lives. For Sara, the resulting economic instability meant a sudden, terrifying inability to find a job.
As her situation spiraled, she retreated to India to visit her family. There, her mother introduced her to their pastor. This pastor had been praying for her persistently, and he took the time to share the Gospel with her.
But rather than experiencing a dramatic, life-changing breakthrough, nothing happened. Sara heard the Gospel, but didn’t pursue it.
Then the ground shifted beneath her. Sara realized her lifestyle was leaving her entirely unfulfilled. She was making mistakes, and the resulting emptiness became a crushing weight.
“I shouted out to God in my room,” she said. “I wanted to end my life. I was done.”
This wasn’t a fleeting moment of despair. Sara was ready to be done with the pressures of this world permanently.
“I was Google searching, ‘How to end my life,’” she said.
In that exact moment of absolute misery, Sara felt the Holy Spirit move.
“A strong wind blew through the window and hit me in my face,” she said. “It startled me. The next thing I knew, I was Googling, ‘How do I find Jesus Christ?’ I picked up my Bible, and it all started making sense.”
The clarity that came with this discovery shifted Sara’s perspective entirely.
“As a kid, the parables and accounts recorded in the Bible just felt like stories,” she said. “After I accepted Christ, I realized the gravity of the situation makes sense. The cross makes sense.”
Sara’s new understanding of the Gospel propelled her into the next stage of her spiritual journey: evangelism.
“The Great Commission says to go and share the Gospel, but many churches don’t have consistent programs to actively share with the community,” Sara said.
As Sara searched the Internet for effective ways to reach the lost, ExploreGod appeared in her results. She filled out the application to become an Online Missionary, stepping into a role where she could use her knowledge of Hindi and her native language, Marathi, to reach seekers halfway across the globe.
“Even though it hasn’t always been easy, it is the most important way we can serve,” she said. “In India, they are surrounded by darkness. Speaking truth to them is vital. Once God's Word goes out, it shatters that darkness.”
Today, Sara recognizes the situation is dire for many seekers in her home country. Apathy is a massive hurdle. But that apathy doesn’t just apply to seekers — it applies to believers, too.
“Culturally in India, people don’t like to engage with these things,” Sara says. “The drive to volunteer and help people just isn’t there.”
This reality causes internal turmoil for Sara. As Jesus Himself said, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.”
“We aren’t constrained by resources to expand our digital outreach,” Sara says. “We’re constrained by the number of people willing to step into the mission field. If we had more volunteers, we’d have the capacity to reach even more people.”
For Sara, reaching those people today is an urgent command. Having stood at the absolute edge of despair herself, she knows exactly what is at stake.
“It comes down to the Great Commission,” she says. “The Internet has given us a way to reach out to people anywhere. It’s up to us to take the next step and share Christ with people who desperately need Him.”
