Everyday Courage

Golden Nugget: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Daily Verse: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” —Joshua 1:9

Daily Message:
The words above were written to the Israelite people long ago after their trusted leader, Moses, died. Their new leader, Joshua, was poised and ready to lead his people into the territory God had given them. But he was afraid—which is certainly understandable!

Like Joshua, I, too, have experienced the grip of fear. Though I am not planning to conquer any countries or cities in the future, I have faced major health challenges with my family. With each new doctor’s appointment, test, and diagnosis, I have felt the clawing tendrils of fear creep in and lay hold of my heart.

As I was dreading yet another appointment recently, I felt that familiar fear and its paralyzing power oozing through my mind. But then I came to a realization that was simple yet profound: God will be with me. Instantly, my fear vanished as I realized I would not be alone. The reminder that God travels with us produces everyday courage.

Consider This:

  • What makes you most afraid?
  • What typically helps you feel courageous?

Take Action:
Try saying this phrase out loud the next time you are afraid: “God will be with me.” What happens to your feelings of fear when you say this?
