Daily Message:
My father lost his battle with cancer almost five years ago. His illness and death prompted questions in me that were confusing and painful. Walking through those difficult months was definitely a trial in my life—one that I did not initially consider a joy.
I remember hearing that things could always be worse. Though my friends were trying to be helpful, their words caused more confusion than comfort. I knew things could also be better, too. And if given a choice, I would certainly choose “better.”
Yet in the midst of those sad days, I experienced the truth of today’s verses. My trials really did produce perseverance—they prompted me to trust God to take care of my dad and my family. Trusting God’s goodness was actually the only thing that made sense in the midst of swirling emotions and painful circumstances, and I felt joy right alongside my pain.
Amazingly, perseverance in believing that God will work through trials brings great joy—joy that is unexplained and miraculous.
Consider This:
- What trials are you facing right now?
- How do you feel about believing that God will work through your trials?
- Do you think it is possible to have joy in the midst of trials?
Take Action:
Take some time to think about your specific trial. What might it look like to believe that God will work through it? Write down one specific way you can show your trust in God today.
