Daily Verse: “But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.’” —Luke 2:10
Daily Message:
Today’s verse is a popular Bible passage for Christians to read during the Christmas season. The good news Luke mentions is the announcement of the birth of Jesus, a birth that will bring about great joy. Sometimes we equate the “joy of the season” of Christmas with the joy that God promises. Big mistake.
How much joy have you experienced during Christmas?
If you’ve ever looked to sugared-up, sleep-deprived children or the approval of a relative for joy at Christmas, you’ve probably been disappointed. While happiness is the experience of feeling good, joy is the result of a life built on the promises and presence of God. Joy is not situational or seasonal—neither candles, credit cards, nor a festive color scheme are required.
Joy is a confident assurance in God’s love for you and his never-ending ability to work in your life, no matter the circumstances. His presence brings peace, stability, and purpose—which are great gifts any time of year.
Consider This:
- How is joy different from happiness?
- What would your life look like if you placed less emphasis on temporary things and placed more on God?
Take Action:
Cultivate the practice of doing life “with God.” Make a conscious effort to remind yourself of his presence with you throughout the day in a variety of circumstances: eating, driving, waiting in line, at work, and in your conversations.
