"Who is he? Is he a politician?"

That's the response the ICY Africa team sometimes hears when they ask people in rural communities a simple question: "Do you know Jesus?" For millions across the region, the most important name in history is just an unfamiliar word — because no one has ever spoken it in their heart language.

But that’s all changing.

ExploreGod has launched outreach efforts in Swahili — its 15th language and the newest voice in a growing digital movement. Through a partnership with International Christian Youthworks (ICY) Africa, the Gospel is now going out in one of the most widely spoken languages on the continent.

More Than a Translation

More than simply adding a language to a list, the launch of Swahili is about reaching into people's hearts at a level that goes beyond shared vocabulary.

Tens of millions of people across East Africa and beyond speak Swahili — a common tongue that stretches across multiple countries and cultures. For many, it is far more than a second language. It is the language of home.

"Swahili is a very important language," Kevin Ligami, ICY Africa’s Chief Operations Officer, explained. "When someone reaches out in Swahili, it's like somebody next door texting us. We relate to it."

That closeness matters more than most supporters realize. When a seeker connects in English, some assume they're talking to someone in the U.S. or Europe — a stranger, far away. But Swahili changes the whole conversation. It signals something powerful: I am here. I understand. I am one of you.

That is the opportunity. A barrier that once kept a Swahili speaker from ever encountering the hope of Jesus is coming down.

A Door English Couldn't Open

For years, the team reached seekers across the region in English. But English could only go so far.

That "Is he a politician?" moment says everything. There are entire African communities English simply may never reach — people for whom the most important name they can ever hear is simply an unfamiliar word. Swahili opens a door into those lives.

"Swahili gives us an opportunity to reach more souls that we would not have reached if we'd stayed with English alone," Kevin said.

The pool of Swahili speakers online is even larger than the English-speaking pool the team already serves — and since the launch, they've already seen a spike in seekers reaching out. This isn't a minor upgrade. It's a whole new mission field opening at once.

A Rising Generation Answers the Call

The ICY Africa team is remarkably young — many of them in their twenties. And every day, they walk alongside seekers far older than themselves, carrying questions about faith, family, finances, and grief.

They don't shrink back from it. "We’ve talked about how we need to offer help regardless of our age," Kevin shared. When one member faces a hard conversation, they bring it to the group. They pray together, advise one another, and carry the weight as a team.

Jesus is doing something remarkable here: raising up a young generation to reach their own communities. As Jamie Radtke, ExploreGod's CEO, has said of the work in Africa, "To have these young individuals responding to their peers is going to be a powerful testimony."

And the needs they meet are real. For many Swahili-speaking seekers, the first cry isn't spiritual — it's survival. "I need help for my family. I need help for my business." Through those initial messages, the team digs into the deeper ache underneath the requests. They meet those seekers right there, in the middle of the hardest parts of life, pointing them toward the One who sees them.

The Battle Behind the Launch

This work is not easy, and it is not casual.

Some seekers arrive angry, even abusive. The internet cuts out. Technical hurdles pile up. But the team keeps showing up, day after day, treating every hard conversation as part of the calling.

"People have different hearts, spirits, and moods," Kevin said. "Our work is to invite them into a place where they can know God."

That kind of steady, patient love takes a spiritual toll — and it needs spiritual backup. These OMs are on the front lines of a real battle, and they're asking their brothers and sisters around the world to stand with them.

Be Part of What's Next

There are two ways for you to get involved today.

First, pray. Cover this team in prayer. Pray for protection and endurance for these young OMs as they walk with seekers of all ages. Pray for wisdom in hard conversations, for reliable connections, and for softened hearts. Pray that Swahili-speaking seekers — in the cities and the rural villages alike — would finally hear who Jesus really is, and find Him irresistible.

Second, partner. Swahili is live, and additional critical languages are already being developed. The doors are open. The harvest is ready. Your partnership can change lives.

Across the continent, the same smartphones that deliver endless entertainment can now carry the Good News — in the language people are most comfortable in. Today God is opening a door into millions of lives English alone could never reach.

Swahili is only the beginning. The opportunity is vast. The team is ready. The seekers are scrolling.
